I'm Daniel.

And I'm a digital craftsman

I am the Lead Product Designer at PSCU, a fintech focusing on Credit Unions and credit card processing. Before this, I was the Associate Design Director for Haneke Design in Tampa, FL. I have been designing award-winning mobile experiences for iOS & Android for the last seven years. My 20+ years of experience ranging from logo design, branding, and email campaigns, to website design, front-end development, and illustration. And everything in between.

During this time, I’ve enjoyed working with mom-and-pops, startups, and companies like Disney, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dollar Rent-A-Car, Thrifty Car Rental, ZVRS, NYSE, One World Observatory, and many others.

A poor craftsman blames his tools.

If it fails, I only have myself to blame.

Good design is good design and doesn't matter which tool you use or trend you follow. UX and UI are intertwined systems of thought. You can't make adjustments to one, without adjusting the other.

Empathy - the most important tool in any interactive designer's toolbox. If you can't get inside the clients' heads and understand their users, then you might as well be playing darts with a blindfold.

Sketch

Graphite, pen and paper help get the creative juices flowing.

Wireframe

Axure or Sketch — it doesn't matter. It's about UX not the tool.

Slay Pixels

Photoshop, Sketch or HTML — It's all pixels to me.

Y’all know me.
Know how I earn a livin’.

In case you don't, here's a break-down of what I do.

  • I want it to work like Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook (UI & UX)
  • Make it mobile (Mobile app design)
  • Make the logo bigger (branding)
  • Make it pop (Art direction)
  • Cat herding (client management)
  • Make it work (HTML & CSS)
  • Quoting useless trivia

Let's get dirty.

A deeper dive into two of my projects.

Interpretation Service App

ZVRS provides interpreting services to the deaf and hard of hearing through a wide array of applications and devices.

User retention was one of the key goals for this version of the app. The client wanted to become the go-to place for all your deaf needs – including Yelp and Google Reviews, custom in-call video controls and integration with Phillips Hue lighting systems.

For this project, I was able to use every tool in my toolbox, including research and interviews, to wireframes and design.

Through a series of interviews with company stakeholders and focus groups, we were able to obtain feedback on rapid prototypes and gain a clear understanding of what we wanted to achieve and how.

As I am not deaf, there were some big challenges to overcome in gaining empathy for the users. Gaining the trust of the team was difficult, but over the course of 7 years, I earned their trust, even learning some American Sign Language.

Because deaf users often suffer from vision impairment I created high-contrast light and dark themes that would be easier to see, as well as custom icons that were easy to identify and aligned to a larger brand system.

.

In call services such as a custom whiteboard, let users create custom messages to display to the interpreter so they don’t have to use sign language to comminicate complicated or intricate messages.

In working with ZVRS I have designed Android, iOS and desktop versions of various apps, designed software used for managing their interpreters and their in-call experience, and put my branding, web and design experience to good use. They were an amazing client that let me flex every design muscle I had.

Hopgrade

Hopgrade is a location-based app that brings ticket buyers and sellers together in a seamless and frictionless experience. Working closely with the Hopgrade team, I developed concepts that the Hopgrade team could use to support their business model and raise the capital needed to fund the project. Two iterations of the app helped us evolve the prototype from its initial concept of a ticket exchange at a sporting event to the service it is now.

As the unofficial product owner for the project, I conducted client interviews and outlined user task flows and wireframes to help shape the experience. The outcome was a minimal design that showcased the frictionless experience our client was looking for.

Since my work with Hopgrade, the product has evolved a few times and is now known as Hop Market. Though I did not directly work on this iteration, the initial design laid the groundwork for the apps evolution. In the process, I learned the importance of prototyping, rapid iteration and testing a concept before releasing it to the masses.
